The movie

The Art of Calcocgraphy offers 15 among the most common techniques of chalcographic print making.
The knowledge of the methods and techniques enables us to appreciate works of the famous artists of the past and of the present and, at the same time, it becomes an important resource in making new experiments and using new methods in carrying out chalcographic works.

Alberto Nacci entrusts the “realistic” sounds and the music with the task to lead the viewer in a sort of journey through time: the tools and the techniques chosen for the movie are, in fact, the same used by the artists in the 17th and the 18th century. New methods and new technological tools, like for example a mechanical burr are added to traditional tools like burin, berceau and dry-point; in this way the artists are given new expressive possibilities opened towards new experimentation in the art of chalcographic print making.
The movie is addressed both to those who are approaching the world of art and to those willing to enlarge their  creative work in the field of chalcography which is particularly suitable for experimentation.

It was directed from October to December 2006 in Benedetti’s studio in Bergamo and in the former church Chiesa di S.Novello in Casalbeltrame, in the province of Novara.
Music recording and audio/video editing were carried out at AJP Studio.

Etching Etching is an indirect technique to etch the metal plates ( zinc, iron, copper, brass ). The bites on the metal plate are made by nitric acid agent(once called aqua fortis)biting in, or by other acids. [details]
The complete opera DVD The complete opera with all the techniques is delivered on DVD format to your postal address. [details]
Direct acid

Nitric acid or other acid agents are directly applied on the metal plate prepared beforehand for an aquatint.

[details]
Burin and punch Tool consisting of a sharp steel rod (tool) with a wooden handgrip The technique consists in engraving a design on a metal plate with the burin or needle. [details]
Carborundum Silicon carbide powder spread on the matrices to get dense areas with higher reliefs on the print. Tactile aspects of the print are similar to those of a very compact aquatint in relief. [details]
Machanical burr The direct engraving is made by an electric or air compressor burr. [details]
Soft ground etching The peculiarity of pen-technique, or soft ground etching is that it shows, when printed, signs and tactile aspects similar to those of the drawing-pencil. [details]
Painting method The main characteristic that distinguishes this technique is in its painting like tactile aspects. It can be carried out by removing varnish on beforehand prepared plate with a brush soaked in solvent. [details]
Salt-lift aquatint Using of salt allows the printing of an aquatint characterized by a variegated and irregular texture. [details]
Mezzotint Direct engraving made by a tool called “moonlike chopper” (rocker, Fr, berceau). The tool is a thick arch-shaped steel blade, toothed at the end and threaded all surface long. In the movie an agate point is used too, in order to lighten some areas of the plate. [details]
Natural oxidization Graining of a metal (iron) surface made by the natural action of atmospheric agents. Further on the oxidization can be reinforced by an acid solution. [details]
Drypoint Technique consisting of direct engraving of the metal by a steel or diamond point. [details]
Sugar aquatint This techinque is applied by using sugar liquid substances. It is called a “manner of pen” as well, because it has similar graphic characteristics to the ink-drawing. [details]
Ink and judaic bitumen On a layer of a printing ink, properly layed out by a roll on the surface of the plate, a powder of Judaic bitumen is to be spread and it sticks  to the ink making a dense layer. By tracing marks with a sharp point on this surface,a drawing will appear. [details]
Wax crayon Using a wax pencil, a crayon, a lithographic pencil, an oil pastel or any other drawing tool, as long as it is anti-acid, one can make a drawing on the plate beforehand prepared with an aquatint (with bitumen, resin, colophony or varnish spray). [details]
The calcographic print The name “chalcographic print” means the impression on the paper from an engraved plate by direct or indirect technique. When the plate has been inked and properly cleaned in all its relieves a damp sheet of printing paper is put on the top of the plate and impressed by a calcographic press passing at high pressure in between two rollers.
